Not sure if it's a dodgy 10-bit -> 8-bit / HDR -> SDR conversion or if the 4K version is also way too contrasty. But I can literally just crank the luma level way too high on the LaserDisc and it looks similar, so I'm assuming it's Not Right.

Hey folks, I haven't seen The Abyss yet. I see there's a HDTV Open Matte rip of the Extended cut floating around: should I go for that one?

Yeah that's the only one I could find as well even though v2.1 has been released.
How much difference is there between 2.0 and 2.1?
from the description: ALL specs are identical to v2.0, but with an improved color-correction pass for all SE footage of Bud in the NTI chamber toward the end of the film. This sequence stuck out to me from the surrounding theatrical shots when I watched v2.0. v2.1 will be the last version of this project.
