Are these full screen DVDs worth it?
Posted by: Eggman - 2021-01-04, 05:31 AM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (2)

I was browsing blu-ray.com for full screen DVD releases and I found some that I think were not present in the Open Matte Master List here on the site. Have you ever watched any of the following FS DVDs and, if so, are they worth it as open matte versions? Have they been superseded by open matte WEB-DLs?

Da Vinci Code, The
Dark Knight, The
Day After Tomorrow, The
Devil Wears Prada, The
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
Final Destination
Freaky Friday
I, Robot
Last Samurai
Mamma Mia
Mask, The
Mean Girls
Mummy, The
Mummy Returns, The
Silence of the Lambs, The
Spider-Man 2
Van Helsing

  [Released] Bandyta / Brute (1997)
Posted by: matppp - 2021-01-03, 10:42 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (1)

Hey. I want to show you my project which is finished.
I bought DVD's then I ripped video from german DVD, polish DVD and France DVD.
Below screenshots of original image:

Here is what I done:
-aspect ratio changed to 1.85:1 from 4:3
-60% dynamic scenes were upscaled by Topaz gigapixel AI, others less important upscaled using lanczos
-fully montage of france, german and polish edition (german one is different in montage so i had to put together) the same with audio
-color correction (the hardest was with france edition because it was completly 'orange')
-i removed the most visible damages of images (for example "black circles" -marks of the end of the acts)
and it looks like that
[Image: ZKTSb40.png]
compare to france:
after my remastering
[Image: 4dNkkvr.png]

In release is:
720p ai upscaled and edited video
2 audio: mastered to 5.1 640 kb/s original audio and 2.0 DD with polish reader
subtitles: polish (+ addon for reader)

Something what you can find on YT is not finished, just an project, also too much compressed by YT).

The Terminator [1984] Ultimate Purist Collection
Posted by: Stamper - 2021-01-03, 11:32 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (11)

So as I recently checked out the U Matic german regrade, and as PDB, who had a regrade project on the back burner for a while, (but a truckloads of other projects too!) suggested, it might be the right time to gather all the past syncs I made from different sources of the different mono mixes, and put them up along with a chosen regrade of The Terminator that is the closest to how the film looked originaly.

I think I would streamline the video back to two choices, either the german U Matic from Der Rabe which I think suffers from a bit too much of a plain white balance (yellow pages aren't supposed to be white, especially in an aged phonebook stored in a phonebooth), or the SDR2HDR VISIONPLUSHDR-X.6000nit from TEKNO3D which is however a whooping 52 GB and which I have not seen yet and have no idea what it is, except that some people says good things of it.

Third option would be a blend of the U Matic + either the original or the SDR2HDR to balance it a bit.

der rabe - Regrade from one of the last "U Matic cinema copies":

For this, I'll add the best versions of those syncs:

1- US Domestic mix
2- International mix
3- HBO laserdisc Chace faux stereo remix (1st home video remix)
4- Image DVD 2.1 mix

+ surviving foreign mono mixes.

And maybe as an extra I'll redo the 5.1 remix fix, only in stereo using a completely different workflow from my initial try. Originaly I put the 5.1 remix as base, and added the mono sounds center (as it's impossible to remove all the redone gunshots as they are on all the channels), now I would just use the mono mix as base, and add a few stereo effects there and there from the remix, thus keeping the purity of the original mix.

The audio tracks would be:

Laserdiscs rips:

*- Chace Faux Stereo remix from original 1985 LD release [HBO2535] BRAND NEW SOURCE IN TRUE FAUX STEREO, AWESOME SOUND. *SYNCED
This was the first home video release of the Terminator on Laserdisc, so history. Also sounds unlike any other mono mix, ever.
*- Domestic mono mix Image Ent. 1995 THX laserdisc rip [ID2940NSB] from Williarob *NOT SYNCED YET

DVD rips:

*- International Mono Mix from MGM SE 2001 DVD different source from TF1 with more dynamic range *SYNCED
*- International Mono mix from TF1 1999 DVD *SYNCED
*- French Mono Mix from TF1 1999 DVD *SYNCED +MID FILM DESYNC FIXED
*- German Mono Mix from early German 1997 DVD (35mm print scan) *SYNCED
*- Domestic Mono 2.1 mix from Image 1997 DVD interesting "fix" with lots of thump I need to redo this as it seems to have a framerate problem. Williarob is helping to sort it out back to 23.976.

Possible additions:

- Domestic mono mix JP [PILF-1297] laserdisc rip from LucasGodzilla (35mm print scan) similar to HBO full screen sound, but is direct from a 35mm print however I need to check if the capture is bit perfect. If not, I won't add it.

- UK Virgin tape from Zoidberg this is a 35mm print scan and I have two rips, great VHS sound, might be a nice alternative.

- Italian mono mix.

- Japanese mono mixes as they are hilarious.

- Previous Chace Stereo thanks to jerryshadoe & MrBrown was alas badly captured and did not feature the true faux stereo sound, so this one is *DELETED and replaced by the brand new Chace rip I found.

- French Mono Mix 2.0 from Early Gaumont LD 1986 by Tommy Lee I SYNCED it + PITCH FIXED it and MID FILM DESYNC FIXED it, alas it appears the original sync was made randomly by cutting out parts of the soundtrack to keep in sync with the 5.1. As I don't have the video, and I already did a nice sync of the french TF1 DVD, I retired this one, it's too much work for not a lot of difference with the already synced french track. Also this rip was clipped, as are most french LD rips in what seems to be a loudness war to have the most huge sounding LD rip.

- NBC At The Movies W O C 09-26-1987 time compressed but has alternate lines of dialogue. A resync would be too much work, and there are different dialogue shots, so for now I'm putting this on the retired back burner until I come up with an idea that would only include the different dialogue lines (maybe incorporating them into a mono mix labeled "TV"?). As it's hacked, resyncing it is too much work and the sound is buzzing all the way during the film. But taking just the differences and editing them into a mono mix that is full might be a better option.

- Domestic mono mix HBO 1989 laserdisc rip [ID6677HB] full screen disc *SYNCED it but this is an ac3 capture and it's similar to the bit perfect LD from Williarob, so no need to add due to the capture not being bit perfect.

- Domestic mono mix Image Ent. 1995 THX laserdisc rip [ID2940NSB] from Team Blu *SYNCED already, but I'm not certain if this version wasn't hacked to keep in sync, so I prefer to delete it.

Suggestions welcome.

  Lord of the Rings reconstruction
Posted by: CaveDoctor - 2021-01-02, 08:09 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (6)

I know there have been some projects here that set out to fix Lord of the Rings.
I've recently got the 4k set, and am curious if any projects based on fixing the films are currently in progress.

I've heard a lot of the complaints about the 4k set, and while I appreciate the uptick in resolution and bitrate, the DNR and edge enhancement have cost some detail.
I looked at posts on Adywan's wordpress, and saw what he was doing with Return of the Jedi, assembling his own master of that movie combining the current home video release, with the 2011 release in order to have a master that DNR didn't totally fuck on certain shots.

With Return of the King's 4k there was one shot in particular, that's on display Caps a Holic, and shows where Gandalf's staff is smeared out, and there is a temporal artifact left by a horse.
So, other than replacing that shot with a prior bluray's version, are there any other approaches that could be used to fix that shot?
Rotoscoping and painting perhaps?

Also, is there a color profile that anyone could share from the prior DVD release of the extended editions of the films?
The first DVDs I bought were those, and I'm in love with the color pallete from those versions of the films, I don't have the DVDs anymore, sadly.

I'm aware that these are 2k upscaled to 4k, with maybe the exception of Fellowship.

BD / UHD Disc and Menu authoring on Mac?
Posted by: DocBrown - 2021-01-01, 12:34 PM - Forum: Converting, encoding, authoring - Replies (2)

Anyone here authoring BDs and UHDs on their Mac?

Back in the mid 2000-2010s I used to create my custom DVD menus, button designs and navigation using DVD Studio Pro. Now that I'm going back into the game I'd like to apply the same level of design with BD and UHD menus. Unfortunately it seems like non of the programs this used to be achievable with are running on OSX (I'm on Mojave). I've tried using Roxio Titanium Toast 17 / MyDVD Pro, but both have extremely limited menu building templates and "holiday home video" templates with garrish colors that won't even let you change font size or color.

It seems the art of home medium menu design is lost. It must be restored!

REGRADE | The Terminator |1984| BD to U Matic Color |German|
Posted by: Stamper - 2021-01-01, 09:06 AM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (12)

So I just stumbled upon info on this regrade of The Terminator that seems to be 200% spots on.

This is an Alternative Regrade from a U Matic copy.

Here's information about this U Matic trend that is exclusively german as far as I know:

U-Matic came onto the market around 1972 and was used professionally by TV stations (e.g. also replaced the 16mm film, reporting, documentaries). In contrast to the later VHS / Betamax, U-Matic offered the better picture, but could not establish itself in the home video sector. U-Matic was still in daily use somewhere up until 2002.

When VHS / Betamax found its way onto the German market at the end of the 1970s, pirate copiers became active, every current cinema film (often a week before the cinema release), and tons of older film titles were copied using U-Matic machines. As a rule, the films were split into 2x60 min. U-Matic tapes.

This resulted in VHS mother tapes, that were a 1: 1 copy without any significant loss of quality. Copies of these original tapes were brought into households nationwide. Avarice Mentality already existed back then, so the first copies of the VHS mother tape were almost exclusively bought by pure film collectors (at 30-70 DM).

The bulk of other copies came from these copies on VHS / Betamax / Video 2000, i.e. with further decreasing picture quality, film titles flooded German households. Copies were sold / lent out and copied again at home for friends / relatives.

Anyone who still has the original 1: 1 copies knows that their quality, especially the original cinema format to be admired here (sometimes slightly zoomed in), was always better in terms of the picture than that of later original rental and purchase tapes from video stores .

It seems that in many cases, U Matic tapes are the only pristine preservations left of the original colors of films that are completely modified on home-video, like The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Alien or The Terminator.

There are dozens of Regrades for Terminator (1984) and the author of this U Matic regrade Der Rabe shows two other alternatives here as a comparison.

Was searching for the best possible version of Man Of Steel

Just an example of the difference I have noticed between 4K HDR and Blu-ray SDR

I feel like 4K HDR is a downgrade comparable to Blu-ray SDR

What do you think?

Yojimbo (1961) - Criterion Mono Blu-Ray synced to Toho Blu-Ray
Posted by: spaceboy710 - 2020-12-30, 08:25 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (3)

Yojimbo (1961)
Criterion 48/24 FLAC synced to Toho Blu-Ray

Per Moshrom
"...the Criterion mono track, which has been restored surprisingly well -- the Toho mono mix has so much tape noise that it sounds like it's raining in every scene"

I thiiiiink he meant the Criterion Blu-ray. I haven't heard either Criterion DVD releases so I can't vouch for them.

PM if interested!
