Have these Laserdiscs been capped?

5 Replies, 4533 Views

I sold the bulk of my laserdiscs and my player a while back  Nothing2say but I kept a handful for nostalgia/keepsakes:

The Killer (Made In Hong Kong, HK002L, PAL, CLV, UK)
Just Heroes (Hong Kong Classics, EE1210 PAL, CLV, UK)

Would anybody be interested in capturing these if they have not been already? I'm based in the UK.

Edit: LD info corrected.

Hi, Zoidberg.

I have that The Killer Laserdisc, and have captured it (it's Made in Hong Kong, not Hong Kong Legends). However, the movie skips in a couple of places, so a second capture could be useful. I'd also be willing to capture the Just Heroes laserdisc if I can borrow it from you. But you might want to see if someone in the UK can capture it to avoid international shipping costs.

Hi IcePrick, thanks for pointing that out, OP updated. Obviously capping within the UK would be preferable but I am open to options further afield.
Here are some screenshots from my capture:

I could try cleaning the disc and capturing again, and see if that fixes the skipping. There are no visible scratches on the disc.

I always remember the Made In Hong Kong titles were framed like that so that the subs were out of the image frame. Unfortunately 16:9 came along and made life difficult.
Am I right in thinking that Just Heroes has only been released on DVD in France? It shocks me that a director as high profile as John Woo has such a poorly represented back catalogue of his Hong Kong films. It's nearly 2017 and neither Hard Boiled or The Killer have been released in the UK in HD, yet they were DVD stalwarts with multiple releases back in the day.

p.s. Thanks for sharing the screenshots!

If you want, I can send you the encode of the capture to have a look. I was thinking about cropping the image to 16:9 and having the subtitles as softsubs, but I couldn't find a program that could OCR the subtitles.

I believe Just Heroes was only released on DVD in France and Japan, neither being English friendly of course. Hell, even his Hollywood movies aren't that well represented; Face/off badly needs a remaster.

Apparently, the Fortune Star catalogue has been purchased for the UK, and there's also the 88Asia line from 88films. So, there is some hope we might see some HK Woo on Blu-ray in the future.
