Army of Darkness - Open Matte (Upscale Project #3 v1.0)

See project origin here: https://forum.fanres.com/thread-1071.html

Video:
The open matte DVD was upscaled with a combination of super-resolution and nnedi with filters to reduce macro-blocking and edge enhancement/halos. The resulting image was further processed and then re-grained with a real grain best matching the BD version. The video was then color corrected with a 35mm LUT and color matched to some 35mm frames and the 35mm trailer scan from book of the dead (www.bookofthedead.ws)

Audio:
1. Dolby Surround PCM 2.0 from the wide screen laserdisc

2. Dolby Digital 5.1 from the open matte DVD.

Thanks:
MrBrown: for the open matte DVD
BusterD: for capping the laserdisc
Awesome, one of my favorites! This looks pretty sweet PDB.
Wow, your 35mm LUT looks very different from how I'm used to the film looking. I know Aluminum Falcon told me once that he saw a 35mm that had a lot of blue, I could definitely imagine a print looking like this. And wow, with this colder timing, that castle shot doesn't look as blatantly obvious that it's filmed in California. (Much as I enjoy the movie, I have never been able to completely suspend my disbelief that this is supposed to be medieval Europe instead of Southern California. If this is indeed how the 35mm prints were timed, maybe the filmmakers were indeed aware of this, and compensated accordingly...)
I'm intrigued. Love this movie.
Yep, definitely one of the best horror/comedy movie, along with Braindead!

Nice project PDB! Ok
Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash... Sad

With all of these upscales I tried not to watch the BD before I go to color it so as not to bias me. I not only looked at that 35mm trailer but a bunch of other trailers/35mm frames and noticed that the night scenes are very blue so I tried to duplicate that. Now the DVD is already cool but during the day scenes I added some green and a little yellow and fixed the skin tones. So it is warmer by a tiny bit then the original DVD. Not positive about the day scenes but does seem the night shots should be blue.

What you don't know about the medieval, English castle in the middle of the desert......
This project is done. Not sure when it will appear in the usual place but if you want a copy now just PM me.
Up in the usual spot. Thanks to the uploader
These upscale projects are superb, and Army of Darkness is well worth everyones time to check out what can be done with just your old DVD's.
Love the colour grading and the Stereo sound option, I watched as a double bill with Evil Dead 2.

Keep up the good work and Im looking forward to Batman plus all the other future Upscale Projects.

Wow, very generous of you to say CSchmidlapp!

I thought these upscale projects would be quick and simple projects but in reality they take as long and are as difficult as any other project of mine. So I'm very happy when people like them.
