_,,,^..^,,,_ presents Waterworld [spoRv] - special project of Restored version

| PROJECTS: Released | In progress | Future | Mission & Setup |

Mission: to fix Waterworld best video and couple it with best audio tracks.
Video source: Italian HD-DVD.
Audio sources: Cinema DTS and laserdisc for english tracks, Italian HD-DVD for foreign audio tracks.
Subtitles sources: Italian HD-DVD for all the tracks.

Project info:
Waterworld is available on Blu-ray; despite the fact it has an higher bitrate of the HD-DVD, the latter is considered by many of higher quality, without DNR; but its color grading is a bit too magenta, so it's color corrected to display better blue gradients.
I also thought to add the Cinema DTS track, plus the analog english track from the laserdisc; foreign languages are from the HD-DVD Dolby Digital Plus track; they lack the .1 subwoofer track, so it's taken from the Cinema DTS, and is re-encoded to DD 640kbps.

Source Material

I have the original soundtrack in case it's needed.
Thanks, but all the needed tracks is just in my "hands"! Wink

That's why I posted it; it's really nearly completed, as it lacks only final encoding and authoring - and, I must admit, also covers, but I'm too lazy to do them today...

Here you are the test 1 images - color regraded, denoised, grain plate applied:

I'm aware that some fine details are lost in the process, but some are refined, and all the compression blocks are gone now, so I'd like to know if you think it's a good tradeoff or not...

I can't tell for sure about the color, but your version seems too blue to me.

About the filters, in general your version looks good, less blocks, but some zones lost a lot of detail, like the part of the ship at the bottom of the last picture.

Yeah, i'd definately agree that the colors are too blue in your version. The white highlights where the sun hits the water in the first screencap comparison are really useful IMHO as a indicator for whether you've gone too far in one direction colourwise. The big problem with judging how to regrade this film of course is that the lighting is notoriously inconsistant from shot to shot because they were shooting consecutive shots at completely different times of the day with the sun moving all over the place and the light changing colour, makes it a real nightmare to work on.

Very much liking what you've done with the denoise and adding the grain plate afterwards Andrea, looks great! It almost looks like your version is from a new master compared to the original screencaps, very impressed! Yeah, you might be losing a little bit of detail here and there but the overall picture is improved to such an extent that I think the tradeoff is definately worth it. Can you post a regraded clip with the denoise and grain plate so we can see how it looks in motion?

Thanks for the feedbacks kk!

I'm proud of the results obtained with the denoise and grain; about color correction, still using that darn little unoptimized ancient ugly monitor... Wink

I'll try to lower the blue level; when it will be judged ok, I'll post a clip.

Yeah, I can imagine that its a bit of a nightmare trying to regrade on that monitor.

Post those screencaps above with the lowered blue level when you get the chance and i'll be happy to have a look, I can act as your eyes Smile

Thanks a lot, four eyes are always better than two - and six are better than four, and eight... Wink

Time to sleep now; hope to find some time tomorrow!
