The Ring (2002) Blu-ray Color Correction
#1
I’ve finally decided on what my very first project will be: The Ring.

The Ring (2002) is one of my favorite horror movies. Unfortunately, the Blu-ray release is even scarier than the movie itself. It suffers from an EXTREME green tint throughout the whole movie. While the movie was always very cool in its palette (which matches the mood quite nicely), the Blu-ray takes it to a whole other level. Fortunately, the DVD’s colors are much better. So, I’m going to use Dr. Dre’s Color Matching and Color Balancing tools to fix this thing.
I tried using the Color Matching tool without the Balancing, but Balancing first gave better results.

Here’s a comparison:
DVD vs. Blu-ray: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/207981

I’ve done a quick test with the tool on this screenshot with promising results:

It’s not perfect, but it is MUCH better. In addition, you may notice slight cropping issues with the BD-to-BD comparisons, those are my doing, and certainly wouldn’t be present on the release. The slight pixellation in the corrected BD shots are also my fault, not the tool's.
Fortunately, the tint seems to be fairly consistent across the movie, so I might not need to do a shot by shot correction, though it is a definite possibility.

Nope, I was actually unaware that one existed. Do you know anyone who has it?

Not until now, but they match the DVD pretty closely, with the DVD being a bit darker. I'm more interested in the fact that they're open matte. I wonder if the full screen DVD is open matte!

Would you be willing to share? I'd love to see some screenshots to compare to the Blu-ray and DVD.

Dang, that is extremely close. Just for an easy comparison, I've lined up your screenshot with the one in my OP:

Looks like the DVD is a bit brighter but otherwise almost identical.

Check your PM Wink

Thanks Doombot, that's what I remembered that the DVHS is the same master as the DVD. What do you have for soundtracks Colson?

For soundtracks, I have the Dolby and DTS surround tracks from the DVD, as well as the DTS-HD MA track from the Blu-ray. I believe I'll include the DTS-HD MA, as well as the Dolby. I assume that the DVD's DTS track is simply a lossy version of the DTS-HD MA track from the Blu-ray, so there's no reason to include that (though I don't know that to be fact, and if you know differently, do share that info).

In addition, I'd be happy to include all of the foreign language tracks (Spanish, French, and Portuguese Dolby 5.1) as well, with all of the Blu-ray's subtitle tracks intact.

My current plan is to use BD Rebuilder to simply insert the corrected version into the retail Blu-ray, though I would certainly be open to doing a BD25 version as well.
