[Discontinued] The 35 Project (aka Project 35)

47 Replies, 37541 Views

This project series is probably done with. Future project using 35 elements will just their own beasts.

---------------------------------------
Couldn't find a better title for this project so bear with the name.

The overall goal of this project is to take existing HD masters and change the colors to look more like a 35mm print using 35mm materials. This originally started out as a sister project to my upscale project here:

https://forum.fanres.com/thread-1071.html

In the upscale project I took the final video and tried to color grade it to match picture of 35mm frames. I wanted to take that idea and apply it to HD masters but go one step further. I have bought several trailers from movies and scanned them myself. It's often said that a trailer might not be fully color timed but that doesn't mean that they are wrong, all the time. In fact most of the 35mm trailer scans I have seen match prints pretty well. I then took the scanned color information, generated a LUT(s) and applied it to the existing HD master to color grade it. It's not without it's fault but creates a fun alternative to the existing HD masters and is an easier way of trying to get closer to the look of a film without the expense of tracking down an actual 35mm print.

So this thread is like my upscale thread, to test ideas and concepts for this project and get opinions from fellow fanres-ers.

A little bit of note. While I do try to even out colors to reflect projection and what current video standards are, you should still expect high contrast, occasional blow-out and saturated colors as you would see in a 35mm print. If you hate that look you may not like these project.

Coming Soon:

Sleepy Hollow
Event Horizon
Great stuff PDB.
As always I look forward to this / these projects from you.

Die Hard 2 looked awesome and those Alien 3 screens seem to promise more of the same Smile
I have a Japanese DVD of Sleepy Hollow which features a full bit rate DTS track if you want it
For Alien 3 Theatrical I have the Home Video DTS that was exclusive to the Japan Quadrilogy, if you want it.

Smile

I have seen a 35mm print of Alien 3 last month as part of a Fincher movie cycle in Paris, France. I compared with Sporv's Fundamental Collection right after. Here's what I told him :

OK, so the print was in its near death, as a pink emulsion stain starts to spread. The lower middle part of the entire movie was affected. But the rest was fine. So I can tell you that your Fundamental regrade is very much better than the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray is too cold, your regrade is pretty much accurate except that sometimes it’s too warm. The very end for exemple is very very warm on your work. Actually, the Blu-ray would be a better match with a TV screen color temperature set to “warm”. Your regrade as well has to be seen with the “warm” setting. Except for the end that should be cooler and at least one other scene at 22’00 (the panning shot is too red). Since the print is in the beginning of its end, I will not come back to see it and will not take pictures of it. Oh, and the whole film on 35mm is darker than either the Blu-ray or your regrade.

Thanks Bigrob. I'm unsure if I will put a third track on SH. Is it labeled as DTS-ES?

Thanks Jetrell, let me nail down the audio tracks for that first then see if it will fit, appreciate it.

Thanks for the rundown Beber, that is helpful.

Thanks for the interest but that's a question that's better suited for that thread. But since you asked, the footage that shonenbat gave me is great but sadly even at 1080i has less detail then the 720p FXX broadcast. The FXX has more detail and less blocking then any other HD copies I have...which is strange. They also have different color timing, the FXX is reddish like the BD (also the Telemundo) and Epix is greener, so it doesn't work 100% as a fill for the logo. So it just takes time to sort it out. It can never be 100% perfect but I rather not release something that I know I can fix.
