Return of the Living Dead (1985) Shout Factory BD with edited credits
#1
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed or not but the newer ROTLD BD from Shout Factory has it’s end credits edited to match the replacement song they used because they couldn’t acquire the original song for this release. The song in question is The Damned - “Dead Beat Dance” and the song they replaced it with is The Straw Dogs - “Young, Fast Iranians”. It wouldn’t be such a big deal but the thing is the new BD looks fantastic and has better framing, less damage and just more detail thanks to the new scan. The UK Second Sight BD looks great but is not as nice looking and has too much chopped off in terms of framing. However, it does include the complete original soundtrack in PCM. I have both the SF and SS UK BD and between them both it could be fixed by someone who knows what they’re doing. I would need some pointers if no one else would want to take this job on. I honestly see this as an easy job for anyone who can simply color match the UK BD to the US BD and then resize it to match the US BD framing to just edit the song credit back in. Any feedback and pointers will be appreciated. Thanx.

PS: It also would be nice to add the original Orion intro back into the front, that was simply cut out from this release. Not a deal breaker but would be a nice added fix.

I'm surprised nobody else has shown interest in this. Count me in, I'd love to have the Shout Factory remaster with the original mono audio track, Orion logo, and correct end credits.

If you guys can provide me with the material I can work on it for you. It would be nice to have the option of two soundtracks on the best video available. I adore this film

Does anyone know where the Second Sight track is from? Wondering if they ripped it from a laserdisc or DVD since its unlikely the studio supplied it without having rights to the material.

Edit: After looking at the SecondSight track I'm not sure its true mono, there are slight discrepancies between channels. I also have the original audio track from the recent German mediabook edition that uses the same new master as the US. It seems to be almost identical to the SecondSight track as far as I can tell, it's just been synced to the new master the Shout uses.

Interesting. I don't know much about how these things work regarding film soundtracks, but that could be the result of transferring the mono soundtrack with a stereo machine that was out of phase, in which case summing the track back to mono would result in phase cancellations. Otherwise, it's possible that whoever engineered the audio for the Second Sight disc gave the mono track a little "fake stereo" processing.

You're probably right, I just used ffmpeg with the phase inverting to see what the difference was. It's about -40 to -50 db peaks, so it must just be slightly off. I can supply the German synced track to whoever is going to do the other edits, it will at least save some time there. I'd still love to get the original laserdisc audio as a comparison point though.

H, Guys. I haven't been around much lately. I see there is new interest in this project. I can supply the Second Sight UK BD and the Scream Factory US BD to anyone that will want to fix these edits to the film. Just let me know what you want.

I finally ran into a halfway decent deal on the ROTLD laserdisc, so it will soon be in my possession. I'll do a bit perfect capture once I receive it so we have that to work with as well.

bronan, you're the man! That's fantastic. I provided the video files from both US and UK BDs to Evit to edit. If you need any audio sources just let me know and I'll help you out. Thank you!
