[Idea] It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World - Partly Animated?

So the Criterion release of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World has an almost complete version of the film, but there are scenes in which the picture element is missing. Which got me thinking - would it be possible to animate those missing scenes, like was done for some Doctor Who serials? It's an idea. And at the same time we could reinsert the other missing scenes exclusive to the LaserDisc versions, and possibly clean up the colours in other scenes if we can. Then there's the missing audio... we'll have to find a way to fix that. It's all something to think about, isn't it?

I think the LD has only one or two exclusive scenes and I can't believe Criterion didn't include them to be honest. The only other thing to check would be the dynamics of the 2.0 surround LD audio against the 5.1 extended Criterion track.

In terms of the missing footage I think that would be a huge undertaking and there's very little you can do and remain fully accurate. This is why a number of restorations are left with still sequences until new footage can be found a'la LOST HORIZON.

Yes, the idea does sort of straddle the line between fan restoration and fan edit.

The first order of business is to ask where the LaserDiscs containing the missing scenes can be obtained, or if there's a transfer we can use.
