Escape from New York 4K Blu-ray: 2.0 PCM = Original Mix???
#1
The 4K Blu-ray of EFNY has a 2.0 PCM track on it. Does anyone know if it's the original mix or just a faltdown of the 5.1? I couldn't find any information about this track.

Original mix based on what I read around in the past when it was released.

Making an educated guess, I'm going to guess that it's a downmix recalling what's been said about the "original" audio track for the 4K release of The Fog. Of course, I could easily be wrong though.

No, definitely not a downmix, was discussed and confirmed over at the forum with blu in the title (such a big thread so not easy to find on a whim), one of the pluses of 4k remaster.

Just found the post by Geoff D confirming it:

"Oh, and after repeated cross-checking with the old R2 BMG DVD I can confirm that the LPCM 2.0 is indeed the original mix. As well as the no-music stretch on Broadway (the 5.1 remix adds some music in) there's another thing to listen out for: when Cabbie follows Snake into the stairwell and Snake asks "what do you want?", compare Cabbie's off-screen reply of "nothin'!". In the OG mix Borgnine's voice sounds just like the rest of his dialogue in the scene, but in the remix his reply sounds very distant and muffled, like it was taken from the production audio during Kurt Russell's angle instead of from Borgnine's shot. A small detail then, but distinctly different between the two. There are other alterations but those two are the main ones I use for reference."

The old disc from MGM already had the original mix. It's still the best version even though it doesn't look like the prints.

The MGM was over dark (I know some people prefer it) and cropped (the Shout was better alone in this regard, the 4k is cropped on the left and to me appears off-center). Personally liked the HDNet color timing the best.

Yes but centered. Smile

Which one is centered, the 4k is definitely not, the credits show it as off-center as well as a number of other scenes where things are cut off to the left (accidently said right above in my previous post, which I have now corrected), the MGM is cropped on both sides, the Shout is best in this regard, shame about the print and color timing.

You got it lol. I saw the movie a few years back in 35mm, and can confirm the MGM is nothing like the print, whereas the print was exactly with the color scheme we know from the other transfers. I'll take the cropping on both sides, for the extra detail as the MGM is from the neg scan (thus explaining the different colors).

I think there is something off with the 4K it looks almost colorless, in addition to not being centered.

As said, like the hdnet the best (even though still cropped) myself, followed by Evit's attempt at fixing the Shout.
