Batman (1989-1997) 4:3 Open Matte DVD Preservation

8 Replies, 3697 Views

Hi everyone

I am currently working on preserving all of the 4:3 Open Matte DVDs in my collection and the four original Batman films are the first ones up. They are also arguably my favorites to watch in this aspect ratio since I grew up on the VHS copies, which are the same master as the "flipper" DVDs. These are 1:1 copies of the DVD files so all of the menus are in tact. I also took the liberty to make 600dpi scans of the cover art.

Here's a screenshot comparison so you know what to expect for framing (slightly cropped sides with top and bottom opened up):

thats great news, ive tried to do the same but my dvd driver in my laptop does not read flipper discs in any form, i dont know why. i miss the static menus with the warner logo, the production notes , and the jump to scene screen. With Batman 89 and Batman Returns we get a washed old transfer, full of dirt and scratches, i´d love to see it again. Also Blade Runner Pan & Scan, if you have it by any chance. Keep the good work and effort, much apreciatted.
That screen comparison might not be the best example you could have found as you lose more horizontally than you gain vertically.
Nice, thanks a lot gameacer23!

I took a few more screencaps here, at least in the case of Batman 89, it doesn't seem like you gain all that much image at the top and bottom.
