Scream DC

16 Replies, 1085 Views

Hi All,

So an upcoming project will be the uncut DC of Scream. I will be using the recent remastered blu ray, the Japanese/German uncut DVDs (hopefully using spoRv's PANup technique) and the audio from the laserdisc. I don't have the Japanese DVD in my hands yet but will do in the next few days, however I read somewhere that it was a port of the Laserdisc so I'm expecting the color to look largely in line with the laserdisc image.

Just wondered what people's thoughts on the color was? Initially I didn't think the Blu Ray looked to bad, perhaps a bit too bright, but on a few of the screenshots I can see quite a difference in blue/teal. Would you keep the blu ray colors or do a full regrade?

Thanks

BD colors are not that bad - maybe adjusting the white would lead to a nice overall balance.
DVD seems a bit too magenta, while LD a bit too greenish.
Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash... Sad

Tbh, I’d keep the colors of the BD.

@alleycat if you wanted to get adventurous though, I think the look of the LD seems better than the DVD (your typical magenta-laden transfer).
Scream was the last collaboration between Craven and DP Mark Irwin, who was fired near the end of the shoot and replaced with Peter Deming. A couple of years back I saw New Nightmare on 35mm, also shot by Irwin and it was very very warm with some nice blues in the night scenes. The New Nightmare blu ray looks dreck by comparison. Whether Scream had a similar look on 35mm I couldn't say, just felt like bringing it up
I’m partial to the more yellow of the ld. It feels like a lpp print of the time.

They are all pretty close so if you use the bd I think it will still look great. The dvd is a tad too red, you might want to see what it looks like without the red.
I think the BD colors look good. Glad to see someone is doing this, shame the DC was ignored in the new 4k release.

Thanks for this, interesting I haven't seen New Nightmare for a very long time but want to revisit - maybe it will make a good 35mm project in the future. I could have sworn I saw a print for sale at some point but can't remember where.

Ok so here are a few tests. This is the Blu regraded to a DVD LUT after the DVD had been corrected for over magenta:

Here is the Blu regraded to the LD (blacks need boosting a bit):

And here is the Blu with just the whites, exposure and shadows toned down:

Looks like the dvd to bd regrade and the ld to bd regrade are close and even closer if you adjust the contrast and black level.

That does make a certain amount of sense, since the dvds were sourced from the extended ld master.
It's all too close to bother. I would just stick the BD colors.
Thanks everyone, gives me some food for thought. I'll get some pending projects finished off first.
