Van Helsing (2004) disc.blue

Found a Russian DVD: open matte, with bigger image than WEB, and, most important, theatrical colors - master is from a release print, including cigarette burns! Much, MUCH better colors (and contrast) than BD (and other DVDs), I always said the latter had wrong colors, but reading reviews here and there, nobody noted it... are they all color blind?!?

The Russian DVD quality is fair, but it has a geometrical distortion; I managed to fix it, along with the usual basic noise reduction, mild sharpening and at the end the grain plate. In comparison to simple upscale, result was good, but not up to the WEB.

So, I slapped the WEB on top of the upscaled DVD, and it works well everywhere but in few shots they do not align well, so those use the upscaled DVD - we are talking about three minutes out of 130.

I've recently saw a 35mm print for sale and, while the colors of disc.blue version are not perfect, they are much better than BD and closer to film - and also bigger frame, of course - by the way, the opening is sepia, as I remembered, and not simply black and white; from top: 35mm, disc blue, Blu-ray:

You may notice that disc.blue has some blown up details; maybe I should make a 2.0 version using the UHD-BD that, while not having a big increase in resolution, it gains something in details - and while there, tweak a bit the color grading... but I guess there is zero interest in this movie!

Indeed... there is that je-ne-sais-quoi - or probably is Kate Beckinsale... I like her so much here, but I fell in love with her in Underworld!
