LaserDisc Analog Track Capture

4 Replies, 4484 Views

I'm currently trying to find the best way to capture analog tracks from LDs. Sadly it's not as cut and dry as Digital is, with bitperfect options like the ESI U24XL.
The equipment I have on me is a GV-USB2 capture card which I use for both video and analog audio currently and the aformentioned ESI U24XL which I use for digital audio over TOSLINK

Currently when capturing the disc I've had to run the disc 3 times, once for video in VirtualDub2, again for bitperfect digital, and again for analog with FFMPEG. VirtualDub2 keeps messing up the audio track with resampling to fix sync issues, and that makes it hard to trust its audio output

What are the options people use around here?
It's a while since I captured my last laserdisc, but I can tell that even if I tried several software, I always ended up using VirtualDub.
Got no problems with audio sync; got bit-perfect capture with PCM, AC-3, DTS. Can't remember settings though, but you may follow the ones found here:

By the way, you can capture audio+video at the same time - also analog+digital, depending on the capture card - so sparing capture time!
Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash... Sad

I've had to use Sound Forge seperately for bitperfect capture of digital, as VirtualDub does not support recording two devices at once
Additionally, my issue with VirtualDub is that I'm getting sync loss of 20-80ms seemingly at random.
As a result it resamples the audio track, and I would prefer to have the rip be as unchanged as possible

I don't know if this is a common GV-USB2 issue or if I just have bad settings

My experience is that the GV-USB2 always combines audio and video into one output. I rely upon it for video, but not audio. For analog audio capture I use a 3.5mm mic input jack on my computer. I run a cable from that to the two (white and red) RCA jacks on the LD player.

Then I use Audacity to capture the analog audio playback. Took me a while to get Audacity setup to properly "hear" the audio but once I sorted that, it worked fine.
