Around the World in 80 Days (1956) disc.blue
Project Info

This is a FanRes exclusive version of the classic TODD-AO feature film; albeit it uses the same HD master, taken from the 70mm 24 frame per second version released in the mid 2000s, here it is slightly sharper, with a bit more image on left, right and bottom, and with nine restored frames (two during the parade in the US and seven at the very end); what is making this edition very different, though, is the theatrical audio track: it is an 8-track using five screen channels and three surround channels (thanks to Perspecta encoding).

Curious to check out the audio track on this. Where did it come from? And what AVRs did you test it in? In my experience PCM in a non-standard 5.1/7.1 won't play back properly. It probably wouldn't hurt to include a 6.0 DTS track for compatibility.
Don't know where it come from, but I've compared it with DVD and they are quite different.

It could be played using an HDMI-to-PCM converter to get also the back channel to work properly; if not, any AVR could work rewiring rear left and right channels/speakers as center left and right, but the back center would eventually be lost, as it uses the LFE channel that is frequency limited.

DTS 6 - do you mean five screen channels plus a mono surround? Or the usual 5.1 configuration?

Downmix the front 5 channels into 3 and then use the 3 surrounds. That would be the best way to play this back in a modern setup without any major hassle.

Yes, but what would be the point then? It would sound more or less as the DVD 5.1 (played through an AVR using DD EX to get BC channel), and the benefit of having the left center and right center, as heard in the theaters at the time, would be nullified...
