[No Longer Available] Back To The Future - Open/Variable Matte (Upscale Project #1)

Looks good to me!
Any progress on this? It looks exciting.
I love this! Great project! TViScale is nice. Do you have a tutorial link as to what channels you tweak when using it?

I love the aspect ratio changing, it's basically like looking as an iMAX version of BTFF. Awesome!

Well this is a good new bad news thing.

The bad news is I started over.

The good news is I started over.

Chewtobacco (who knows his stuff) has been nice enough to spend a lot of time helping me with IVTC'ing another project. So I decided to apply his advice here. I was originally going to fix the 3 or 4 shots where the IVTC failed but then just decided to do the whole thing, just in case.

And since I was re-doing the video I decided to give the edge enchantment (EE)/halos a second look and I think I eliminated about 75% of the bad EE from the original DVD. Sadly, it means losing a bit of the sharpness of the original DVD but all of that was artificial sharpening anyway. The re-graining helped to hide a bit more EE.

And since I was looking at the halos I decided to take another look at the color correction. I removed a lot of the red from the original DVD but left the yellow/orange which looked a lot like some of the 35mm frames I have seen. But ilovewaterslides posted some pics from a 16mm print of BTTF, they looked bluer and cooler. So I color corrected it again to more neutral skin tones and cooler highlights and removed a good portion of the yellow/orange. I like it better.

And a more extreme example:

Also Doombot who always is nice enough to preview my work and give me insightful advice really liked the "experimental" Fosgate soundtrack but it has the problem of the rears being to loud in volume so he is fixing that bit for me.

And since he was doing that I decided to try to sync the TV soundtrack again.

Only thing I'm unsure of is fixing the pink skateboard wheels. Not sure how to do that and have it match.

So its still coming, just better then before.

I used this:

and built the nodes myself in Nuke. Like I said it looks great but the workflow is a monster.

Here's the same sample which comes from an old VHS TV Recording sourced on a theatrical print:

That's a pretty awesome. Thanks for sharing waterslides. I wonder if the green tone is theatrically accurate.
You're quite welcome! To me the green tone is theatrically accurate in a way because it is the case for The Terminator. This German DVD which was directly sourced on a theatrical print has the same green tone as the remastered BD. So it would make sense. Anyway, it was my color reference for my custom BTTF version which is not as green but close. You can see a sample here:

I like the look of that regrade, ilovewaterslides. Were you planning on releasing it?
Well, it was originally a private project I made with the movie being entirely localized in French in addition to the regrade. But nothing stops me from making a US version as well! Smile
So yeah, would be fun to make this project. Might also include the original stereo mix and the "To Be Continued" title card. What do you think?
(This post was last modified: 2016-06-04, 12:51 AM by ilovewaterslides.)
I think that sounds like a great idea, especially using the original stereo mix!

The timing of both the Blu-Ray and the DCP never sat right with me; it looked like just a straight IP transfer with no consideration to how theatrical prints genuinely looked, similar to how The Terminator came across for ages.
